THE judges said it was just a ‘slip of the tongue’ but it tarnished what was an otherwise pretty successful launch to the Miss Uganda 2008 regional campaign at the Gardens Restaurant, in Fort Portal on Saturday night.

With the first and second runners-up announced, Miss Uganda CEO Solaya Zalwango said “… and the winner is… contestant number five,” only she announced the wrong name, and there was a bit of chaos afterward.

Contestant number five was Jacqueline Nyakato, but she announced the winner as Daphine Kowe, who collapsed when it turned out she was not the winner after all. And many people, including her family, complained.

“She heard her name being read. We have a feeling she was the winner, but Nyakato went at the front very first,” said one of the disgruntled contestants.

But utl public relations manager, Mark Kaheru, at a post-event press conference said: “It was a mistake and we apologise. But since Daphine was aggrieved, we shall take four girls for the Kampala pre-selection, instead of three.”

As it turned out, Jacqueline, 19, a Senior Three student of Kahinju SS, was the winner, followed by her twin sister, Joceline Nyangoma. Tina Nabukalu, 22, a Third Year Makerere University student, was second runner-up.

Eight girls took part in the pageant. The four will meet other girls from other regions in Kampala from whom 22 finalists will be selected during the pre-selection.

It was a well-organised event, apart from the mishap at the end. Even the notorious Fort Portal rains stayed away. Toro’s home-grown singer Moses Kigambo, the best cultural artiste winner at the PAM Awards 2007, entertained guests with his famous song, Ekiraale.

PAM Awards’ female artiste of the year, Sophia Nantongo, similarly wowed the audience with some of her favourite hits, including Wansumulula and Amaggwa ku Meme.

Miss Uganda is sponsored by utl, Air Uganda and Club.
