CHRISTIANS in Mukono district have asked their diocese leaders to stop the impending transfer of their dean, the Rev. Stephen Kazimba. They argued that he should be their next bishop.

Kazimba is tipped to replace the Mityana Diocese bishop, the Rt. Rev. Dunstan Bukenya, who is slated to retire before the end of the year.

But Christians in Mukono want Kazimba to replace their current bishop, the Rt. Rev. Paul Luzinda, who is also soon retiring.

“Kazimba has contributed towards the development of our diocese. He is a hardworking man. It is unfair for them to take him away from us,” said a Christian who preferred anonymity.

Kazimba was the brain behind the construction of the diocese Church House, a school in Nakosi and getting scholarships for the diocese clerics, a female Christian leader said.

A catechist said they had decided that Kazimba’s transfer should be cancelled.

“If the diocese does not listen to us, we shall petition the Archbishop’s office. We have the right to choose a person we want to serve us,” she said.

Kazimba, who has served the diocese since 1984, confirmed that Mityana diocese officials had contacted him over replacing Bukenya.

“I thought about it and later gave them my CV (curriculum vitae),” he stated.

Kazimba said he would love to serve his parent diocese (Mukono) if the opportunity arises, but added: “Serving God is a calling. Wherever God wants me to serve, I am ready.”

Luzinda said he was not aware that Kazimba had been contacted: “I have not yet released him.”
