THIRTEEN Universal Post Primary Education and Training institutions in Karamoja sub-region will benefit from a sh24.8b infrastructure development project. Education minister Namirembe Bitamazire and the Irish ambassador, Kevin Kelly, launched the project at Moroto High School on Friday.

Under the project funded by Irish Aid, nine administration blocks, 30 classrooms, 27 laboratories, three libraries, 17 dormitories and 36 staff houses will be constructed.

A computer laboratory, 94 latrines, a kitchen and water supply systems will also be built.

The beneficiaries are Kotido and Moroto primary teachers’ colleges, Moroto High School, Kangole Girls, Jubilee 2000, Karenga and Kaabong secondary schools. Others are Abim, Morulem Girls, Lotuke Seed, Arengesiep, Namalu and Pokot secondary schools.

“The project is a big boost to the education sector. It will contribute a lot towards the Government’s continued efforts of ensuring that all Ugandans have access to quality education,” Bitamazire said.

Kelly noted that the project would increase access to quality secondary education in Karamoja. “Today marks the dawn of a new era for education in Karamoja. We are witnessing not only the building and reconstruction of schools but also the building and reconstruction of communities.”

Moroto LC5 chairman Peterken Lochap asked the ministry to establish more seed schools in the area.

“We have only one seed secondary school which is still under construction yet there are many sub- counties which are not accessible.” said Lochap.

The resident district commissioner, Nahman Ojwee, urged the ministry to build more teachers’ houses and classrooms.
