Anti-graft team formed

RUKUNGIRI-The district has formed an integrity and anti-corruption committee to fight graft among civil servants. The resident district commissioner, Dan Kaguta, heads the team, which is comprised of the resident state attorney, the district Police commander, the chief administrative officer (CAO) and a few civil society members. The CAO, Muhenda Rujumba, said graft was responsible for poor service delivery in the district. He said the ethics minister would soon commission the team before it could start work officially.


Schools to export crafts

KASESE-Schools in the district will soon export locally-made handcrafts to Germany, the council speaker, Jane Kamashamba, has said. While commissioning the first batch of beads produced by Rock Primary School on Friday, Kamashamba said the district had linked with institutions in Germany to do the marketing. The beads will be sold by Ravels Bach Institute.


Wilt strikes bananas

RUKUNGIRI-Banana wilt disease has broken out, ravaging plantations in 11 sub-counties. The district agricultural coordinator, Zepher Karyaija, said the disease had rapidly spread in Nyakagyeme, Kebisoni, Ruhinda, Buyanja, Nyakishenyi, Kagunga, and Buhunga sub-counties because the farmers had ignored expert advice.


Cop held over murder

KABALE-The Police are holding a constable, Benson Bamwesigye, attached to Hamurwa local administration over the murder of a pitsawer, Christmas Maritazare, who was shot dead last Wednesday at Kagondo trading centre. Detective Alice Gasasira said Bamwesigye handed himself over to the Police on Thursday. The Police said Maritaraze was shot after he attempted to attack Bamwesigye.
