Spouses of Commonwealth leaders have potential that can be used to better member states, the First Lady, Janet Museveni, has said.

She urged the spouses to pursue a common agenda and file reports during their meetings that run parallel to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings.

Janet made the remarks on Wednesday during a meeting with Babi Sharma, the wife of the new Commonwealth Secretary General, Kamalesh Sharma.

Kamalesh took over from Don McKinnon this month.

She welcomed Sharma and appreciated her efforts in uniting spouses of Commonwealth leaders and tackling problems of member states.

A State House statement said Sharma thanked Janet for showing interesting in Commonwealth activities, adding that the spouses should have achieved a lot by the next CHOGM in 2009 in Trinidad and Tobago.

Later, the First Lady received a group of youth from the US-based Harvest Evangelism International Transformation Network.

The group, led by Pastor Swart Wedner, is in Uganda for a six-week evangelistic drive.

Janet urged them to emulate Jesus’ example while conducting their evangelistic work.

She also asked them to emphasise the dangers of HIV/AIDS in their ministering, especially to the youth.

She advised them to teach abstinence from premarital sex, adding that it was the only sure way to avoid contracting the disease.

The group thanked the First Lady for the warm welcome and for her strong belief in Christian values and principles.
