A UGANDAN environmental advocate, Fred Kafeero, has been appointed a consultant with the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Kafeero, who is one of the founding members of Environmental Alert, an NGO established two decades ago, has been serving as its executive director.

“I have played my part and I think 20 years is a long time and it is time to move on. Changing leadership is something which other civil society organisation should cherish and emulate.”

He will serve on the national forest programmes in the UN body and takes up office early next month.

“I promise to establish productive linkages with donors for the civil society in Uganda in light of increasing challenges of climate change and environmental degradation,” he said last week in Kampala.

Christine Nantongo, formerly of Care International, has replaced Kafeero as executive director.
