Parents tipped on children
JINJA - Protect children from sexual exploitation, parents have been told. The officer in charge of the family protection unit at Jinja Central Police Station, Betty Mbulante, told journalists on Wednesday that sugar daddies and mummies had increased in the area. Most victims, Mbulante said were teenagers in secondary schools and tertiary institutions. She called on parents and local leaders to work with the Police to ensure that the culprits were arrested and prosecuted instead of settling matters out of court.

Chiefs warned on certificates
SOROTI - The chief administrative officer, George William Omuge, has cautioned sub-county chiefs against issuing completion certificates to contractors before the district engineer verifies their work. Breach of this would be conflict of interest, he said. Speaking to the officials in his office on Monday, Omuge added that the district would institute tough measures against people involved in delivering shoddy work.

Katakwi, Mbale get 7 bikes
KATAKWI - A charity has donated seven motorcycles worth sh21m and sh49m to AIDS grassroots networks in Katakwi and Mbale districts. The aid will help coordinate capacity building programmes in the areas. “People living with HIV/AIDS play a vital role in the response towards the pandemic,” said Asaph Byamukama, the grant manager of International Alliance HIV/AIDS. Katakwi has about 145,000 people with 5,000 of them living with HIV.

‘Conserve the environment’
KAMULI - The district council has been advised to form committees to make by-laws that conserve the environment and natural resources. Addressing the district technical planning committee on Monday, an environmental official from Grand Consult Group, David Baguma, said the committees would conduct campaigns, draw work plans and environmental self-help programmes. He said this would lead to sustainable and economic development.
