RESIDENTS near the city’s main waste dumping ground in Kiteezi, Wakiso district, have protested over the stench. Over 50 trucks ferry garbage to Kiteezi three times a day and deposit between 800 to 1,000 tonnes of garbage daily.

RESIDENTS near the city’s main waste dumping ground in Kiteezi, Wakiso district, have protested over the stench.

“The garbage has become too smelly because the managers of the dumping ground have failed to cover it with murram,” said Samuel Kibuuka, the LC1 chairman of Lusanja village.

“The waste covered is too little compared to what is delivered and this has caused over-accumulation of refuse with some of it blocking the road.”

Residents of the nearby Kiteezi and Kitetika villages have also complained of inconvenience from the stench.

Kibuuka said residents resolved last week to place barricades across the road leading to the dumping ground to block Kampala City Council trucks and others of private companies from accessing the site. The Police was deployed to prevent violence.

Kibanda MP Owor Amooti Otada, whose company last month took over the management of the land fill from Dott Services, promised to resolve the problem.

“He assured us that they would buy appropriate equipment that could handle garbage even during rains,” said Kibuuka.

“Our people understood and gave them more time to sort out the problem.”
The New Vision saw unsightly mountains of garbage littering the road linking the ground to Kiteezi Road.

Water was oozing out of the garbage and flowing all over the area, rendering the waste water treatment plant useless.

The site supervisor, Edward Semanda, said they were doing everything possible to beat the stench.

“The waste we handle includes the carcasses of dogs, cows and cats. Unless these are covered with soil, it is impossible to overcome the smell.”

Kampala City Council records show that over 50 trucks ferry garbage to Kiteezi three times a day and deposit between 800 to 1,000 tonnes of garbage daily.
