JINJA-The National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda has lauded Kakira Sugar Works for treating and compensating an employee who lost his arm. The organisations’ deputy executive director, Hellen Asamo, said the company bought Joshua Nalima an artificial limb. Asamo said although many employers discriminate the disabled, some had improved their working conditions. Speaking to The New Vision last week, Asamo urged companies to create favourable working conditions for the disabled.

Young people urged to read
MBALE-The acting mayor, Jamila Naleba, has urged young people to develop a reading culture to excel academically. Naleba, who made the remarks while officiating at the celebrations to mark the World Book Day at Mbale Municipal Public Library, said it was not wise for a student to depend entirely on a teacher’s notes. Naleba, a teacher said there was need for young people to write poems, songs and other literature. St. Joseph Gangama, Umar and Yumbe and Tower primary schools wrote poems, sung songs and presented plays depicting the importance of books in society. The best performers got prizes.

Swine fever hits Soroti
SOROTI-Swine fever has hit the area.In a report to the district council committee, the production coordinator, Dr. Joel Francis Okalany, said the disease had killed 235 pigs in the last two months. The most affected areas included Katine and the northern division in Soroti municipality. Appealing for support, Okalany said the viral disease was contagious and had 100% infection and mortality rate. He added that although swine fever does not affect human beings, it makes pork unpalatable.

Baptist Union donates sh15m
KAPCHORWA-The Baptist Union of Uganda has donated sh15m to facilitate the construction of a 200-seater Church in the town. The parish priest, pastor Peter Kwemboi, said the union promised to inject another sh3m into drafting the plan of the building and its inspection.
