School gets land offer
KAYUNGA - The Government has given Ahmed Sseguya Memorial Technical Institute in Kangulumira County sh47m and 67 acres of land. The money is to improve sanitation at the school, including putting up a new pit latrine; while the land is for the institute’s expansion. The principal, Haji Mustafa Bukulu, said this while meeting a team of district local councillors led by the chairperson of the education committee, Kizito Ntege. They were on a monitoring visit. He said the offer resulted from a pledge by President Yoweri Museveni when he visited the institute in 2000. The institution admits Senior Four and Six leavers to do courses in motor vehicle mechanics, tailoring, carpentry and joinery, as well as brick laying.

HMs appeal over transfers
KAMPALA - Headteachers have appealed to the education ministry to revise transfer procedures. “We get problems during transfers, more especially under religious-founded schools. Some parents don’t accept headteachers from a different religion,” one headteacher said at a Cyber School Technology workshop at Hotel Africana recently. The headteachers also asked the ministry to stop deploying armed guards during national examinations. “Imagine an inspector moving around a school with armed soldiers. This affects the students, which could lead to failures,” they said in a statement. They demanded that the ministry sets a number of years a headteacher should stay in a school before being transferred.

Bishop warns on gay acts
MUKONO - The Mukono Diocese bishop has warned headteachers who condone gay acts in school, saying they risked their jobs. Eriya Paul Luzinda was handing over certificates to the 2007 UACE candidates at Kanjuki SS. “As leaders of the Anglican Church we cannot tolerate such acts,” he said, adding that they know schools where students engaged in the practice. He asked headteachers to dismiss gay students. Hilda Nabweteme was the best student, with 24 points in History, Economics, Geography and Literature. She received a prize from the headteacher, William Kanyike. Luzinda asked headteachers to handle students who indulge in drug abuse, saying they were responsible for strikes in schools.

Storm blows school roof
WAKISO - A damaged roof for a Busabala Primary School classroom block by a heavy downpour did not prevent pupils from continuing with their lessons. Though stranded on how they are to reinstate the destroyed roof for the three-roomed block, school management has opted for a shed from a big tree located in front of the destroyed structure to continue offering lessons to the innocent pupils. Alice Sentongo, the headmistress, located in Makindye Ssabagabo, said efforts have been made to get support from the Government and other well-wishers to re-roof the building but they were still fruitless.

UK Christians build classes
NAKASEKE - Studying under a roof has been a dream for over 300 pupils of Luwempe African Child Primary School in Kikamulo sub-county. Now the dream has come true, thanks to a born-again missionary group from Southwick Community Church in the UK. The group is constructing a classroom block at the community-owned school. The project, which started this month, is to cost sh50m.

Teachers ask for facilities

MOROTO - Teachers have appealed to the Government to renovate dilapidated classrooms in Government-aided schools. Meeting the social services committee of Parliament recently, Betty Emong, the headteacher of Okodiokodio Primary School, said most of the buildings were death traps. “Many classes are over-crowded and have cracks. We fear they may collapse and kill pupils.”
