A Mulago Hospital-based laboratory has won a prestigious international award in HIV/Aids research, reports Fortunate Ahimbisibwe.

The laboratory jointly established by Makerere University and America’s John Hopkins University emerged second runner up for the prestigious 2008 Laboratory of the Year Award.

The laboratory is part of the Infectious Disease Institute, which carries out research on how to treat and prevent HIV/AIDS. It also trains medical doctors from Africa on the best ways to prevent and treat the disease and runs a clinic for patients.

The award is granted for efficiency, quality control, quality assurance and inspection.

The laboratory scored high in all the points, according to Ali Elbireer, the institute’s head of laboratory services.

The overall winner was Medical City Dallas Hospital Laboratory followed by Shannon Medical Centre Laboratory in the US.

Elbireer said this was the first time a laboratory outside the US had emerged at the top.
