THE crowd’s favourite was Doreen Ahiibwe. However, as most audience members perceived it, her chances of winning the title were slim, especially considering that she hails from a different part of the country.

Eventually, 21-year-old Patience Atimango was declared eventual winner of the inaugural Miss Gulu University pageant at Acholi Inn last Saturday.
A visibly happy Atimango said she was lucky to be the very first Miss Gulu University.

“I have made history,” she bragged, before saying “thank you” fourteen times in eleven seconds, facing a large audience that turned up for the event. Thanks to the sponsors BlackStar promotions and Movit.

Atimango, a first year student of Public Administration beat competition from ten other equally impressive contestants to take the crown.

But unlike other beauty pageants where winners are driven away in prize cars, Atimango had to make do with a brand new computer and a digital camera.

First runner up Jacqueline Aken won herself a laptop while second runner up Christine Awor got a digital camera.

Q&A with Atimango
Patience Atimango is the new Miss-Gulu University. She beat 10 contestants to win the first beauty pageant in the university walking away with a brand new computer and a digital camera. Miles Rwamiti talked to her about her life and what she expects.

Who is Patience Atimango?
I am a very quite girl who takes everything simple and I am God-fearing. I was born in Kitgum 20 years ago to Mr. Camkak Nono, a businessman, and Helen Camkak, a house wife. My family is God-fearing and my dad is a strict man who puts God first in everything he does.

We are four children and I am the first born. I went to Rev John primary school in Kitgum and later to Iganga SSS.
I moved to Gayaza high in
Kampala where I completed my ‘O’ level. I joined Lake Side College Luzira for my ‘A’ level and then Gulu University where I am studying for a degree in Public Administration.

How does it feel to be crowned the most beautiful girl in Gulu University?
Oh my God, very great because I have made history of being the first Miss Gulu University.
Right now though, the sky is the limit for sure and to be honest I cannot explain how I am feeling. But in a nutshell I feel proud, happy and delighted.

How would you feel if you had lost?
It did not cross my mind that I would lose because I worked so hard.
But even then I was a competition where there’s always a winner and a loose. Just like anyone else, I would be fine with everything.

Did you deserve to win?
That’s too hard to tell my dear. But I think I deserved it because I had everything it takes like confidence on stage, vibrant and good on the cat-walk.
The rest of the girls also were all good from cat-walk to modelling and they correctly answered the questions.

Do you think winning Miss Gulu University will affect your private life?
The truth of the matter is that I am not that person you can find any where may be partying.
A few friends I have can testify. I don’t go to night clubs or move to public places for fun and I think I will still be the same girl.

What’s on your agenda?
I will carry out and organise, counselling services to all types of people. This can help the community especially to the school drop out. Through this I will dwell so much on things like unwanted pregnancies, discipline, rape and defilement.

How have you prepared to juggle studies with your duties as Miss Gulu university?
In everything I do studies come first.
I will actively serve my best the school and at the same time concentrate with my books since education is the key to success.

What’s your idea of love?
Love is something real but people mistake love for lust.
It is not a silly thing to be in love provided it’s the right time and place.

What do you think of men?
The best word should be ‘cheat’. Most men do cheat at least from what I have been told and seen. A small number of men may not be cheaters but majority are.

Do you have a man?
Yeah, but not serious yet.

If voted president of Uganda what things would you look at first?
I would encourage Ugandans to be their own bosses than waiting for white collar jobs. This is such a bad habit in most people after school they rush to look for jobs which jobs they never get.
That’s why you find some people so rich and the one poor is poor.

Three things you would ask God if you meet Him.
To keep my parents alive until I graduate so that they see me graduate. I would also ask him to get me a man who is God fearing and respectful and good grades.
