Defiler jailed for eight years
MASAKA - A teacher of Kiganda Primary School has been sentenced to eight years in jail for defiling one his pupils. Dennis Nkalubo, 32, was on Friday found guilty of violating the eight-year-old P.3 pupil by the High Court presided over by resident judge Vincent Kibuuka Musoke. Court heard that on November 29, 2005 at Kiganda village in Sembabule district, Nkalubo sent the girl to take books to his home. He later followed her, locked the girl inside the house and defiled her. After the heinous act, he gave the victim sh500, ordered her not to reveal anything and promised to give her free marks in exams. The girl’s mother reported the case to Lwebitakuli Police Post.

‘140,000 kids living with HIV’

MUKONO - Close to 140,000 children are living with HIV in Uganda, and 25,000 are infected annually. Many of these children have no access to anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs) and as a result three quarters of them die before their 5th birthday. These revelations were last week made by Dr. Patrick Bukoma, who is the national coordinator of Baylor-Uganda, a US-based charity. “Currently, out of the 47,000 children eligible to receive ARVs only 8,000 are receiving the drugs. Out of the 300 health centres accredited in Uganda, only 115 provide ARVs.” Bukoma was representing his organisation at the signing of the memorandum of undertaking with the district. In the agreement, Baylor-Uganda agreed to supply ARVs to all health centres in the district.
