RONALD Ssebuguzi, hitherto regarded the lone contender for the 2008 National Rally Championship, is troubled by his diminishing fortunes. Ssebuguzi, who won the season opener in Luwero to take a commanding lead, dropped out of the Mbarara Rally and KCB Pearl of Africa Uganda rally last weekend to surrender the lead.

The 2006 national champion consequently dropped to fourth spot, 180 points behind leader Ahmed Ashraf.

With reigning national champion Ponsiano Lwakataka taking a break this season, Ssebuguzi was expected to make light work of a host of club man rally championship drivers. The Jomayi Property Consultants driver has already started mending his Mitsubishi Evo IV ahead of the MOSAC rally in June.

“Mechanical problems have put me in a terrible situation. It won’t be easy to catch up with Ashraf but I have to make sure the women don’t beat me,” Ssebuguzi lamented.

“If Lwakataka’s wife (Rose) beats me, I will just retire because Lwakataka would make me a laughing stock in this city.”

Rose Lwakataka, who finished seventh, was the best local driver in the Pearl rally, earning 140 points which propelled her to second spot in the NRC standings with 215 points. Laila Mayanja is third with 120 points while Ssebuguzi follows at 100.

There are three events remaining on the NRC calendar and Ashraf just needs to finish in the top five to claim the national title.
