THE SUNDAY morning drizzle made the 2008 Lake Victoria Triathlon at Entebbe Sailing Club, a wet, slippery and muddy event, especially in the dirt road sections.

Swimming in the rain, a youngster called Rahim, returned first, ahead of many mature swimmers.

Although this year’s cycling event claimed few bruises compared to last year, all the bikers returned sporting mud on their bodies and riding gear. One fellow broke his bike chain, but managed to finish. It was, however, more horrifying for the runners as many missed the marked routes and thus ran extra kilometres.

Cam McLeay, in the individual men’s category, emerged winner of the event, posting a time of 02:32:22.

Proceeds of the event went to ForWater, an NGO partnering with others on projects centred on water and sanitation. Youngster Sharif Kakooza was second and third was Jedidiah Stern.

In the women’s individual category, Laura Frederick was first. Brett Marie Bell and Marie Monaghan were second and third respectively.

There were nine men’s teams, seven mixed teams, two women’s teams and one corporate challenge team — Bayport Financial Services.

The event organiser, Fridtjof Behnsen, whose 2 Muzeys with a Talent team came second in the men’s teams, encouraged corporate teams to join the event.

The National Water and Sewerage Corporation had registered three teams, but none of them participated. Bayport Financial Services, therefore, eased through.

Paramboot Breweries, under the Moonberg Lager flagship, sponsored the event.
