THE National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) is working with veterans at Banda and Kireka to acquire land outside the Kinawataka swamp for a car washing bay.

This followed a series of meeting between the two parties during which NEMA sensitised the veterans on the importance of wetlands.

“We have agreed to relocate the washing bay from the wetland because the Government considers them as a special interest group,” said Dr. Festus Bagoora, a natural resources specialists.
“It should not be seen as compensation, but this had to be done to settle the issue amicably.”

Last month, NEMA unsuccessfully attempted to evict the veterans from the swamp.

The swamp naturally filters impurities from water discharged by industries before being released into Lake Victoria.
Bagoora said NEMA had completed marking the borders of the swamp.
The veterans said the demarcation exercise had affected over 50 people.

Col. J.B Mulidwa, the director of administration and personnel in the National Reserve Force, said: “If the ecological systems are not there, our livelihood will become endangered.”
