Man held over fake money

THE Police in Masaka district are holding a 25-year-old man for allegedly making counterfeit coins. Southern Police commander Andrew Sorowen said Nsubuga Katanza, a butcher of Magezi Cell in Lukaya town council, was found with materials used to make fake coins.<br>

THE Police in Masaka district are holding a 25-year-old man for allegedly making counterfeit coins. Southern Police commander Andrew Sorowen said Nsubuga Katanza, a butcher of Magezi Cell in Lukaya town council, was found with materials used to make fake coins.
“We also found him with fake sh500 coins worth sh5,500,†Sorowen said, adding that another suspect only identified as Kiberu escaped. He had fake coins worth sh59,000.
Katanza’s arrest followed a tip-off from residents.
“We recovered two pliers, two spoons, a stove, a knife and a hammer used to make the money,†Sorowen added.
Katanza said they melt car battery terminalsand pour part of it in a mould the size of a sh500 coin.
“When it cools before becoming hard, a genuine sh500 coin is pressed against the surface of the counterfeit coin.
“When it hardens, the coin is sprayed with a silver colour,†Katanza explained.
He will soon appear in court.
