RESIDENTS of Kayunga and Nazigo sub-counties in Kayunga district were gripped with shock when unknown people dug up graves and took of with human remains.

The graves were dug up on Thursday and Friday nights from different homes in the villages of Mataba, Kiwooza and Njalebireese in Kayunga.

Only skulls were taken and the other parts of the body were left behind.

In Nazigo, a cemetery belonging to Muslims was raided and Twaha Wusaama’s body, which had been buried a fortnight ago, was taken.

The LC3 chairman for Kayunga sub-county, Lugard Ssalabwa, said: “The bodies could have been exhumed by traditional healers because they are the ones interested in human remains.”

Mataba LC1 chairman Emmanuel Nsubuga said three graves were dug up in the homes of Lutakome Nyanzi, Emmanuel Mubiru and Grace Nabikande.

The bodies, which were exhumed, were buried in the early 1990s. The district criminal investigations chief, Grant Tabo, said no suspect had been arrested over the matter.

“We are still carrying out investigations and the suspects will be charged with disturbing the peace of the dead,” the Police crime chief told The New Vision.

Last year, the Police arrested a traditional healer, Waiswa Ndaaye, for being possession of a human skull.
