CRANES forwards Caesar Okhuti and Geoffrey Sserunkuuma are determined to play their way into coach Laszlo Csaba’s 2010 World Cup qualifying side with a goal-laden performance against Tanzania tomorrow.

With the national side required to come out with a three-goal margin victory in their crunch African Championship qualifier against the Kilimanjaro Stars, the two strikers already look to the opportunity as the best possible route of plunging themselves into the first team.

Under normal situations, Geoffrey Massa and Eugene Ssepuuya would be Csaba’s preferred attack against Niger on May 31.

“We know what’s at stake. We desperately need to score more than is required to prove that we are good enough for the senior team. A lot has improved about my game,” said Sserunkuuma after training yesterday.

The striker got one of the goals as Cranes obliterated Eritrea 3-0 last month.
Csaba will also have the options of Robert Ssentongo and Anthony Bongole on the bench.

Big score-lines are not exactly Cranes staple diet but history proves that the task is not beyond their reach.

Uganda first scored more than three goals in a Gossage Cup match 78 years ago. Then, the Cranes shipped five past regional rivals Kenya in a pulsating 5-3 win in 1929.

The Gossage Cup, later renamed the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup, was to provide Uganda with her most imperious performance; when the Cranes defeated Kenya 13-1 in 1932 on top of big wins against Tanzania.

Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro Stars arrived in the country yesterday determined to prolong Cranes’ first leg nightmare.

“We expect to face a big challenge from the Cranes as they will be playing at home. They will not be ready to lose on their own turf but my boys are in high spirits of winning,” Tanzania’s Brazilian coach Marcio Maximo said.
