‘SACCOs not political’
LIRA-The Prosperity-For-All programme does not seek to woo people into the NRM party, the resident district commissioner has clarified. Joan Pacoto told a consultative meeting at White House Hotel recently that people had misunderstood the drive to forming savings and cooperative societies. “Supporters of the NRM think it is their thing. They have misunderstood the SACCOs programme.” He said the cooperatives were a means to implementing the Prosperity-For-All scheme, irrespective of political affiliation.

Pader district planner held
PADER-The district planner, Richard Bongomin Akal, has been charged and remanded over misappropriating sh34m. Bongomin was last week arrested by officials of the Inspectorate General of Government (IGG). He was charged before the Grade One magistrate and remanded to Gulu Central Prison. The IGG accused him of falsifying accountability. But the district chairman, Peter Odok W’Ocheng, said Bongomin was being witch-hunted. “He accounted for all the money. They want to arrest all my workers so that my government collapses,” W’Ocheng complained.

Gulu seeks water funds
GULU-National Water and Sewerage Corporation is seeking sh48b for the Gulu-Tochi water supply and sanitation project. Area manager Kenneth Musabe on Monday said the project had been designed by the Kampala-based Gauff Consultants. The project, he pointed out, would involve the development of intake at Tochi stream, expansion of the water treatment plant and construction of a new water reservoir. The entire distribution network will also be replaced, Musabe added. The new system will produce 16,000 cubic meters of water per day and will supply Gulu town and its suburbs. Currently there are 140,000 customers in the town.
