A NEW multibillion shilling mall located on Kitante Road in Kampala is set to open in August.

Oasis Mall, adjacent to the Garden City shopping complex, will house the flagship branch of the Kenyan supermarket chain, Nakumatt, Barclays Bank, Kenya Commercial Bank and Ecobank branches.

It will also have shops, food courts and a hotel, making it a one-stop leisure centre.

Asha Hersi Moghe, the managing director, said in an interview over the weekend that the project should have been completed by last October but it was delayed by the bad weather. Oasis Mall will be the first in Kampala.

“We begun with the construction last year in January and were supposed to have opened last year in October, but the weather has not been good. It has been rainy but now an August opening shall happen,” she said.

Moghe said they were creating public awareness for the property, which she described as a one-stop shopping centre.

“We have already signed an agreement with Nakumatt to be the anchor tenant,” she said.

She said the first phase of the project was the construction of the mall, while the second phase would be completed when a 125-room hotel is commissioned.

“When the whole project is complete, one will be able to get everything ranging from services, shops, cinemas and hotels in one place,” she said.

Moghe disclosed that the construction of the hotel would commence after the mall was opened. She, however, could not specify when the construction works would start.

She said they would also construct a road from Kitante Road to Wampewo Avenue.

“This will be at our own cost to ease the flow of traffic around to the area. There will be a multi-level parking lot for 450 cars. I can assure you there will be no congestion,” she added.

Moghe said the new development was evidence of the family looking to establish firm roots in Uganda.

“We are grateful to the Government for the help it has given us in advancing this project.”

. We are confident it will be an investment this country can be proud of,” she said.
