THE BUSHENYI Woman MP, Mary Karooro Okurut, has urged the district leaders to enact by-laws against alcohol consumption.
“If the rate at which people are taking alcohol is not controlled, family wrangles in the district will increase,†Karooro warned.
Addressing Karungu women leaders at Buhweju sub-county headquarters recently, Karooro said people, especially in the villages, spend most of their time drinking waragi (local potent gin), which she said was a challenge the district leadership must deal with.
“We need a strong by-law to curb this practice that has led to poverty and threatens families,†she said.
The women complained that some of their husbands give away household property as security for crude waragi.
The Karungu sub-county community development officer, Aggrey Twinemujinya, said men had left agricultural activities and education of children to women.
“During the harvesting season, women are beaten by their husbands while safeguarding their produce,†he said.
Bushenyi district has experienced several murders which the security officials attribute to family wrangles, especially land.
