THE Ministry of Health plans to elevate Gulu and Mbarara hospitals to national referral standards because they have the requirements, the health state minister, Dr. Richard Nduhuura, has said.

“Such standards include having a medical school which both Gulu and Mbarara hospitals have.”

Touring Gulu hospital last Tuesday, Nduhuura said the Bill would soon be tabled in the Cabinet.

“The President challenged the ministry to develop a master plan to develop the health sector. We are seeking an appointment to discuss the master plan with him. The plan focuses on improving the status of health centres.”

The minister said the project, which requires trillions of shillings, would be implemented in the next financial year. Nduhuura said the ministry would send infrastructural development funds to Gulu for the reconstruction of the dilapidated medicine store.

The medical superintendent, Dr. Tom Otim, said they received a new ultra-sound scan from the Italian Cooperation, which the hospital lacked for 10 years.

He added the cooperation would also construct an X-ray block and equip it with a machine.

Otim decried the shortage of drugs, especially painkillers and antibiotics.

The resident district commissioner, Walter Ochora decried the sorry state of the hospital.

“The Government should transform Gulu Hospital into a true referral facility. All referral hospitals have been renovated except Gulu. The equipment is in a sorry state and many people rush to Lacor Hospital for better services,” he said.
