THE Opposition Chief Whip, Kassiano Wadri (FDC), has retracted his earlier testimony that he saw MP Ibrahim Kaddunabbi Lubega giving money to Florence Hashaka, which he suspected was a bribe.

He told the parliamentary discipline committee chaired by Asuman Kiyingi (NRM) that he confused Youth MP Mariam Nalubega (independent) with Hashaka (NRM).

“I apologise to the committee and retract my earlier submission implicating Hashaka. I confused her with Nalubega because they are all brown and short,” he told the committee probing allegations by Aruu MP Odonga Otto (FDC) that six MPs were bribed to support the supplementary budget for CHOGM.

Last month, Wadri told the parliamentary discipline committee chaired by Asuman Kiyingi (NRM) that he saw Hashaka (NRM) receiving money from Kaddunabbi (NRM) at the Stanbic Bank branch at IPS building in Kampala.

But Kaddunabbi said he withdrew the money from the Muslim Trust Fund to fund activities of the Parliamentary Muslim Caucus.
He said he was in the company of Nalubega not Hashaka. Otto claimed that the MPs received a sh170m bribe from the foreign affairs ministry.

The MPs included William Nsubuga (NRM), Hashaka, Kaddunabbi, William Okecho (Independent) Rose Akol (NRM) and George William Wopuwa (NRM).
Hashaka said although her name had been tinted by the allegations, she was happy that the remarks had been retracted.

“When the allegations came up, I knew I was innocent because there was no way I could have been bribed when I was not in the bank and neither a committee chairperson nor a deputy. As a child of God, there was no way I could have received a bribe.”

Last week, Otto retracted his earlier accusations against Buvuma MP William Nsubuga that he also received a bribe to support the budget.
