LARGELY known for their run-away hit, Kplongo, otherwise known as Kologo to Ugandans, Nigerian duo, Danfo Drivers (Mad Melon and Mountain Black) will jet into town on June 25.

The two friends will stage shows at Kati Kati grounds on June 27 for sh40,000 (VIP) and sh15,000. A family show at Gaba Beach will set revellers back by sh10,000 and sh5,000 for children.

The duo will then head to Arua’s Container Village for a street jam on July 5.

Show promoters, Paragon Promoters, who recently ferried in Nigerian acting midgets Aki and Paw Paw, say the group could be as big as Peter Miles or Ngoni by Ugandan standards.

“They command a good following in Nigeria and I am sure they are getting popular here,” says Paragon’s directors Emmanuel Onouha and Folder Dare.

Onuoha adds that Danfo means “Matatu” in Nigeria so the duo passes for driver and conductor as Danfo Drivers. Their music is punctuated with stories that appeal to the ordinary person in Nigeria and elsewhere.

Such songs include No Mind Them, a fast-flowing Afro-beat song advising people not to mind their tormentors, Aisha, which is about a girl from Kano, who has a different religion and tribe and good education compared to her suitor and Arigo, which is quite engaging and danceable.

However, Kpolongo is the most interesting of all the songs due to its free flow, heavy beats and the infectious chorus with a chant that sounds like our own “Nakawunde”.

The song, according to Onouha, means “shout it out”. Done in a local Nigerian dialect and English, the song has taken Uganda’s local FM stations and clubs by storm.
