Cleaning utensils is an activity done many times a day in homes. Where as in villages, families construct drainage racks on which to dry their utensils, this may be difficult in urban areas where people lack such a place.

Even if this is the case, the good news is that the shops dealing in kitchenware are flooded with portable dish draining racks in different sizes and colours.

A dish draining rack is a handy kitchen accessory that has different compartments to dry plates, glasses, cups and cutlery. The racks are made of different materials. Some are metallic while others are plastic.

Dish racks are available in most shops and supermarkets; just check out the kitchenware section. Prices of plastic dish racks range from sh8,000 to sh10,000 while the metallic racks cost between sh10,000 to sh20,000, depending on the design and size.

Lyne Atuyambe, a health officer with the Institute of Public Health says: “Using a dish rack is the best way to dry utensils as opposed to using a cotton cloth to wipe the utensils since some people use wipes that are not clean enough.”

Seema Punjani, a manager with Hwan Sung show room at Jinja Road says: “Apart from draining water from utensils, a rack helps to make the kitchen look organised.”

Seema adds that people without kitchen cabinets or cupboards can use the racks for storing the utensils, because the racks have different compartments for glasses, cups and cutlery.

She adds that using a dish rack may prevent you from accidentally breaking a glass. It will also save you the trouble of looking all over the place for utensils, since they are all kept in one place. With a dish rack, there is a semblance of order.

Seema advises that while you shop for the dish rack, it is advisable to buy light-coloured racks like white, pink, red and light blue because they encourage cleanliness. Any dirt on them will show easily, as opposed to dull colours like brown or black.

She emphasises that to help bring out a coordinated colour theme and enhance your interior decor, it is better to buy a rack with the colour that blends with your kitchen’s colour scheme.

In terms of durability, Seema advises that you go for a metallic rack because it does not crack or break as easily as the plastic type. However, she emphasises that the rack be stainless steel to avoid rusting.
