THE Masaka district council has approved a sh3.5m monthly fuel allowance for the LC5 chairman, Vincent Ssempijja.

Recently, the district purchased a Lexus vehicle (model 2005), worth sh130m, for the chairman.

During a meeting last week, the councillors also approved a fuel allowance increment for the district speaker, David Muzanganda, from sh800,000 to sh1.8m per month.

However, the district chief administrative officer (CAO), George Ntulume, said it was not proper for the district speaker to have a higher monthly fuel budget than his.

“My office gets sh1m as monthly fuel allowances. It will be funny for the district speaker to get sh1.8m.”

The councillors also supported the proposal to increase their monthly allowances and emoluments from sh300,000 to sh500,000. Ssempijja urged the finance committee to identify new revenue sources.

Finance committee head Henry Mayiga said the district would be required to raise at least sh800m of the local revenue collections to finance the increased expenditure.

The council rejected a proposal by former finance secretary Ssalongo Kalumba that the council should buy a new car for the district speaker.
