OVER 100 delegates arrived yesterday for the 12th Organisation of the Islamic Conference (IOC) business forum which opens at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala today. About 600 guests in total are expected to attend the meeting.

President Yoweri Museveni, who returned yesterday from a six-day visit to the UK and the US, is expected to open the business forum.

“We are expecting 400 local participants and about 160 foreign guests. These have confirmed their participation,” said Olive Kigongo, the head of the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the organisers of the forum.

This is the first IOC forum to be held in Uganda and will run from the June 16 to 18. The theme is: Discover the Resources and High Potential of the African Market.

The objective of the meeting is to help Uganda, East Africa and Africa to connect with the OIC for business in areas such as insurance, export of fruits and non-tariff access to the IOC market, Kigongo said.

“I am confident that every participant will build beneficial business networks within the OIC region and globally.”

The OIC consists of the Islamic Summit, the largest organ attended by kings, heads of state and government. It is convened every three years.

The Islamic conference of foreign ministers, on the other hand, meets once a year to examine a progress report on implementation of decisions taken by the Islamic Summit.

The permanent secretariat is the executive organ of the group, which implements policies and decisions.

The current secretary general is Dr. Ekmeleddin Olu of Turkey, who took over from Dr. Abdelouahed Belkeziz (Morocco). Its last summit conference was held in Dakar Senegal from March 13-14, 2008.
