THE number of scholarships for Ugandan students in India will double next academic year, the Indian high commissioner, Niraj Srivastava, has said.

Currently, 30 students are granted scholarships to study in tertiary institutions in India annually.

“The bilateral relationship between Uganda and India dates way back and my government appreciates it,” Srivastava said last week while visiting the Indian Temple on Nagongera Road in Tororo town.

“Basing on this background, my country will next year increase the scholarship opportunities to Ugandan students from 30 to 60.”

The resident district commissioner, Mpimbaza Hashaka, who was accompanied by his deputy, Richard Gulume, commended India for the generous gesture.

He said doubling the number of scholarships would improve Uganda’s human resource.

The scholarships would be granted to students intending to study information technology and law among other courses.
