A TOTAL of 760 farmers in Wakiso are to be trained in better farming practices under a sh400m project.

The three-year project will be implemented by the Agency for Integrated Rural Development (AFIRD), a non-government organisation. It is funded by Misereo, a Germany-based NGO. It will benefit farmers from Namayumba, Kakiri and Masulita sub-counties.

“The sub-counties have for years not received agricultural training from government programmes. Farmers are still planting local products, which are not only prone to pests and diseases but result into low yields,” Eustace Sajjabi AFIRD’s coordinator, said.

Sajjabi said at one time, Namayumba was referred to as the ‘Karamoja’ of Mpigi before the formulation of Wakiso district.

“It was so backward and there were limited efforts by the district authorities to develop it. When Wakiso was curved from Mpigi, we started training households in better farming practices,” he said at the programme’s launch Kulika Training Centre off Hoima Road.
