THE East African Community has embarked on making tuition fees in universities across the bloc uniform, the deputy secretary-general, Beatrice Kiraso, has said.

The education curricula and certification in the higher institutions of learning will also be harmonised to ensure uniformity in the job market, she added.

Addressing journalists at the Media Centre in Kampala on Monday, Kiraso added that a waiver on the student visas in the partner states would also be established to facilitate economic integration in the region.

She said the East African power and road master plans, cable system and a civil aviation agency had been set up.

Flanked by the EAC director of customs and trade, Peter Kiguta, Kiraso said a lot had been achieved in the implementation of the customs union because the volume of trade had shot up.

“The inter-EAC trade flow increased from $1,483m in 2003 to $1,854m in 2006.” Kiguta noted that when a common market protocol and the monetary union are put in place by 2012, trade barriers in region would be no more.

He said the first stage to the monetary union would be the consolidation of the internal markets and removal of controls on the movement of capital.

On the fast-tracking of the EAC, Kiraso noted that a report of the study that was conducted in 2007 showed that the majority of people were not aware of the East African integration.

“For example, people did not understand the model of federation that was being proposed."
