It is believed to be the biggest wedding the country has seen in recent history. An estimated sh800m was splashed. The bride and groom’s outfits alone cost about sh32m. After tying the knot at Namirembe Cathedral, the royal couple hosted an estimated 200,000 people to a reception at the king’s palace at Mengo. The guest list included King Mswati of Swaziland. Stampedes, fainting and injury were reported among the sea of guests.

Muhoozi was the first of the President’s children to wed, and the ceremony was truly befitting of the first wedding celebration in the first family. Hosted at the President’s country home, Rwakitura, Kiruhura, the guest list had the big names of the land and glamour was evidently in excess. Museveni’s daughters, 2000-2004

Between 2000 and 2004 the President and First Lady occupied the enviable seats of in-laws at three different functions. The three first daughters married within a space of four years. Natasha wed Edwin Karugire, Patience wed Odrek Rwabwogo, and Diana wed Geofrey Kamuntu. There was the rare occurrence of the National Anthem playing at a wedding. All of them were front-page stories in local newspapers.

Traffic in Kampala came to a standstill on April 24, 1999 as the bridal convoy of Museveni’s driver William Mugerwa and city businesswoman Agnes Babirye crawled from church to the reception at Namboole Stadium. The convoy was led by an excavator. It was said that a super-league football match between KCC and Simba had to be relocated to Nakivubo so that guests could use the stadium.

The famous Kansanga Miracle Centre pastor last year wed in style. His reception is reported to have cost more than sh300m. Thousands attended the reception at Namboole Stadium.
