The municipal council is to spend sh4.6b in the 2008/2009 financial year.

Presenting the budget at the community hall on Wednesday, the secretary for finance, Margaret Kihika, said sh2b would be spent on the education sector.

She explained that sh65m was for the Universal Primary Education programme, while sh752m would be spent on salaries for primary teachers and secondary schools would get sh1b.

Kihika said sh1.3b would be spent on the works sector, sh239m on finance and planning, sh77m on community-based services, while the health and environment sectors would get sh396m.

She said the Ministry of Health had given the council sh60m for upgrading Kataraka health centre into a grade four facility.

Kihika said the district expected to get sh492m from the Central Government.

Schools get more rooms

Schools have received classrooms worth sh37m and 1,323 desks from the Japanese embassy.

Deputy ambassador Kazuaki Kameda handed over the facilities to the district authorities during a function at Kyakakungulu Primary School last week.

He pledged Japan’s support to the education sector. The acting district education officer, Edward Kiirya, said the desks would be distributed to 20 primary and one secondary school.

Judge warns lawyers

Lawyers have been warned against filing cases they cannot follow to the end.

The new High Court judge, Alphonse Owiny Dollo, also told lawyers who usually delay cases by asking for adjournments to refrain from the act.

“I hate lawyers who keep asking for adjournments,” Dollo said during a hand over ceremony at the High Court premises. He replaced Justice Albert Rugadya.

30 vendors arrested
Mbarara

The Police have rounded up 30 vendors in a crack down on illegal businesses.

Police chief Ivan Nkwasibwe said the suspects were found in Kakyeka, a suburb of Mbarara municipality.
