ST. Balikuddembe Market (Owino) is to be relocated to allow its redevelopment into a six-floor shopping centre.

The vendors’ chairman, Godfrey Kayongo, recently said 72% of the vendors had contributed towards the project estimated to cost $60m (about sh96b).

“Money is not a problem now. We are just waiting to get a lease from Kampala City Council (KCC) and start the work immediately.”

During the vendors’ meeting at Sharing Hall, Nsambya, Kayongo said the market would be temporarily shifted to a nearby plot.

The resident district commissioner, Alice Muwanguzi, assured vendors that as sitting tenants, they would get the first priority to redevelop the area.

“What you have to do is to follow proper procedures with KCC. I assure you the lease will be offered to you.”

The vendors already have the backing of mayor Nasser Sebaggala and the local government minister Kahinda Otafiire.

Muwanguzi urged the management committee to be transparent to avoid disagreements.

There are about 50,000 people operating in the market. Each vendor is expected to contribute sh1m towards the redevelopment.
