CRANES’ convincing win and draw against Angola in last month’s 2010 World/Nations Cup qualifiers have earned them June’s uganda telecom-USPA award.

After a stunning 4-1 defeat away to Benin, Cranes recovered with a 3-1 win over Angola in Kampala, then followed it with a draw away in Luanda. Anything less than four points would have virtually put Uganda out of contention for a place in the 2010 Nations and World Cup.

The national soccer side collected 605 votes ahead of their rugby counterparts (590), who came second at the scribe’s monthly meeting at Oasis restaurant in Lugogo yesterday.

Cranes’ striker Eugene Sepuya was third after gathering 425 votes and the Kampala City women basketball team which won the Africa Zone five inter-cities championships in Dar es Salam was fourth with 380 votes.

Sepuya made the list after he scored in the 4-1 loss to Benin and also in Cranes 3-1 win over Angola. Uganda’s next games are in September against Niger, and in October against Benin.

It is the second time in successive months that football wins the award. Cranes captain Ibrahim Segakya clinched it for scoring after a header against Niger in their opening World Cup qualifying match in May.

Rugby Cranes were nominated for beating Botswana 27-10 as the African champions launched the defence of their title.

The meeting sponsored by telecommunications company, uganda telecom, also had 94.8 Vision Voice features editor Charles Odongtho taking USPA members through investigative reporting.

Citizen secondary school U-14 football team, athletes Abraham Chepkwirok, David Okoth and cricket player Joel Olweny were all commended for excelling.
