Burnt hostel to be closed
JINJA-The Lubani SS boy’s hostel, which was recently gutted by fire, should be closed, the district education officer, Abraham Were, has said. The hostel located in Lubani trading centre, Butagaya sub-county, was burnt twice in five days. During a meeting with the school directors last week, Were said the condition of the hostel, which housed 200 students, was pathetic. “The hostel was overcrowded and situated in a wrong place. The finance committee should look for resources to construct a new dormitory for the male students within the school premises,” he said. Were added that the six students, who were suspected to have set the hostel ablaze, had been suspended indefinitely. “The head boy is the key suspect. It is alleged that on the fateful day, he removed his property from the dormitory and hid it somewhere. His colleagues allege that the fire started from his bed and when it spread, he ran to the main gate and locked it from inside,” Were explained.

Tororo to host Food Day
TORORO-The district will this year host the national celebrations to mark the World Food Day on October 16. President Yoweri Museveni is expected to grace the occasion whose theme emphasises food security, climatic change and bio energy. Dianah Kasangaki, a member of the organising committee, said Mudodo and Akodoti villages in Rubongi and Mukujju sub-counties respectively would be the model villages to be visited during the celebrations. She regretted that Tororo was among the districts that were faced with devastating environmental disasters because vast areas were bare due to deforestation.

Kamuli cattle quarantined
KAMULI-The district authorities have imposed a cattle quarantine on farms following an outbreak of the foot-and-mouth disease in the area. The district veterinary officer, Dr. Kiiza Wako, said the disease had been reported in nine sub-counties. They are Balawoli, Namasagali, Butansi, Namwendwa, Bulopa , Kamuli town council, Nabwigulu, Kitayundwa and Wankole. Wako noted that the disease was spreading at a high rate and urged farmers to cooperate with the district in the fight against the disease.
