THE legal and parliamentary affairs committee has demanded that High Court judge Jane Kiggundu should leave the Solicitor General’s office.

MPs argued that it was illegal for Kiggundu to hold two public offices.

Kiggundu recently took over as acting Solicitor General after the interdiction of Lucian Tibaruha, who is being investigated for alleged mishandling of cases.
Bugweri MP Abdul Katuntu (FDC) on Friday said: “You can’t have a judge who has taken oath and is busy sitting in another office. She has to quit. That is the law!”

Deputy Attorney General Frederick Ruhindi’s explained that after Kiggundu was appointed judge, she wrote to the justice ministry asking for more time to hand over the office.

The committee gave Ruhindi a week to take the appropriate action on the matter.

The minister had led a team from the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to answer queries raised by the committee over the ministry’s budget for this financial year.

He appealed to the committee to assist the ministry secure land for the construction of a permanent office in Luzira, a Kampala suburb.

The officials disclosed that 15 state attorneys would be recruited this year and the case backlog would be reduced by 15%.
