THE ordination of gay priests in the church is unacceptable, the Omukama of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom has said.

Solomon Gafabusa Iguru said the practice, which has been introduced in the church by some Christians in the West, was aimed at diverting Christians from the true word of God and urged the people to fight it.

“I urge you to do everything in your power to resist it,” he said.

The king made the remarks during the ordination of six priests and five deacons at Bujumbura Catholic Cathedral in Hoima town on Saturday.

The Ugandan law prohibits marriage between people of the same sex.

The Church of Uganda and other Anglican provinces in Africa, South America and Australia recently formed a new spiritual movement in opposition to the authority of Canterbury, the seat of Anglicanism.

The protest followed Canterbury’s failure to discipline The Episcopal Church of America and Anglican Church of Canada which recognised same-sex marriages and consecrated gay priests.

Iguru asked church leaders, especially the newly ordained priests, to preach against homosexuality and lesbianism in the church to protect the sanctity of African values .

“I appeal to the clergy to denounce gay Christians in order to maintain the holiness of the Church and keep it as one.”

The Omukama also urged the people of Bunyoro Kitara to unite around the Kingdom for development.

The Bishop of Hoima Catholic diocese, Dr. Deogratius Byabazaire, presided over the ceremony.

The new priests are Simon Kasangaki, Anatoli Kirigwaijo, Joseph Bakale Ssenyonga, Robert Bommera, Godfrey Kisembo Tuhairwe and Emmanuel Lubega Kamoga.

Byabazaire urged Christians to offer moral and spiritual support to the new priests.
