Vice-President (VP) Prof. Gilbert Bukenya has called for unity in the fight against household poverty. Bukenya was over the weekend addressing farmers from Kakiri sub-county at St. Mbaaga Secondary School in Wakiso district.

The farmers recently went to Rakai district under an exchange programme sponsored by Bukenya.

They visited Mitondo model village, which is pioneering a holistic approach to fight poverty and promote household hygiene and health.

Bukenya said it was important for families to be involved in income-generating projects to improve their welfare.

“As the front runners in improving agriculture production, it is important that you tackle all aspects of household poverty, including promoting good sanitation practices, using energy-saving stoves and producing organic manure from household waste to improve gardens,” he said.

The Vice-President pledged to support farmers who establish model projects for poultry, dairy farming, coffee farming, fruit production and an improved drought-resistant banana variety, popularly known as Mpologoma.

Bukenya urged farmers to work together through cooperatives to exploit the available markets for their produce.

The farmers hailed Bukenya for the exchange programme and pledged to emulate their Rakai counterparts to promote hygiene alongside their income-generating activities.

They urged the Government to enforce the ban against polythene bags (buveera), arguing that they were detrimental to the soil and they negatively affect their crops.
