THERE is a lot of untapped talent in Jinja, if the Bell Pearl of Africa Music (PAM) Awards launch at the Crested Crane Hotel on Saturday night is anything to go by. The artistes were as diverse as their stage names.

They included Ramunansi (Ramula Nansoge), Jesnase Dogg (Ibrahim Abdil Hamid), City Street, AB Kale, and Yusuf Kelly. The latter sang two Afro Caribbean tracks, Mukwano Tonsela and Hasidi (hypocrite).

Omumbejja Donel’s vocal delivery matched her perceived “royal” stage name. AB Kale was engaging with his Nemedekko and Darling Nakupenda, as was City Street, the Kampala-based duo of Devlas and Kasammy. Their Siyomba, brought memories of Benon and Vampos’ breakout hit, Nsazewo.

Nkwanzi Troupe’s performance of Diana and Isilili was as impressive as their traditional costumes. Jonathan Ivulungo and Vicky Maris performance of Omuzaire, Ndigida Omuziki and Sigwe Eyasokawo demonstrated new-found liveliness.

The home artistes here were overshadowed by Kampala-based stars. Toniks, a product of one of the Eastern PAM Awards launches in the past years, received wild ululation evocative of a big star, thanks to his signature tune, Beera Nange. The trio of Born Ugandans enjoyed the limelight with Police, Entalo and Abalalo, which was banned from some radio stations because of its lyrics that seem to cynically politicise cattle rustling.

Main Street also had a good time with their maiden hit, Juba but it was the mega duo of Mozey Radio and Weasel that provided the night’s highlight. Arms waved and hands clapped as hundred of voices shared choruses as Radio and Weasel performed their new hits, including Nakudata and Zuena. Equally impressive from Kampala were Desire Luzinda, Obessions, Iryn Namubiru, No Creature, KS Alpha, Napoleon, Prisca Mukami, Viva stars and Shana, Kid Fox and Bebe Cool.
