THE High Court in Kabale presided over by Justice Lawrence Gidudu has sentenced Robert Turinawe, a boda-boda cyclist, to life imprisonment for attacking and wounding a villagemate.
Gidudu said Turinawe, together with others, on April 6 attacked Africano Kahwite, a resident of Buhara sub-county, Kabale district and chopped him with a panga, leaving him for dead.
The convict and others also made off with sh100,000 from the victim, which Gidudu said should be refunded.
The judge advised the victim to ask for compensation from the Government. Kawhite, who is steadily recovering, has deep cuts on the neck, back and the left hand.
The slender man in his late 50s with a wrinkled face, was all smiles after the judgment was read, saying he was happy justice had been delivered.
When the verdict was announced, the packed court room that was dead silent erupted into wails and moans from the convict’s relatives.
Turinawe, 20, will be transferred to Luzira Prison in Kampala to serve his sentence.
In a related development, Gidudu sentenced Rogers Tuhanise and Alex Tumusime to five years imprisonment for raping Allen Akatorona.
Gidudu ruled that the two youth attacked the victim at his home in Rukiga county, Kabale district in May 2005 and raped her.
The judge said the maximum sentence for rape was life imprisonment but he opted for a less severe punishment because the culprits were young and first offenders.
He advised the convicts to change their behaviour. The state attorney, John Bosco Asiimwe, had asked for a harsher punishment, saying it would deter others from offending women.
