BUGANDA'S Kingdom’s deputy minister for information, Medard Lubega, was yesterday picked in the city by unknown people suspected to be security operatives. He was whisked off to an unknown destination.

The incident happened mid morning just as Lubega walked out of his law chambers on Johnson Street, sources said.

He was heading to Hotel Africana to attend the opening of the Buganda Conference when people in plain clothes aboard a pick-up truck swooped on him. They bundled him on the truck and sped off. Lubega was expected to chair a session on land development and federalism.

Kingdom Attorney General Apollo Makubuya broke the news at the conference, causing a stir. Kampala Extra Police Chief Edward Ochom said he had just heard about it but he had no confirmation of his whereabouts.

“I am trying to cross-check. I even don’t know what the offence is,” Ochom said.
But Lubega’s partner, Erias Lukwago, the Kampala Central MP said Lubega’s arrest came as no surprise.
“We received information from a confidential source Thursday night that a decision had been taken to arrest Lubega,” Lukwago said.

Prior to the arrest, Lukwago said Lubega had gone to the Buganda Kingdom radio, CBS, and run a news byte to the effect that he had been tipped about his impending arrest.

Lukwago said they were planning to move to the Police headquarters to seek an audience with Police Chief Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura to try and establish who could have carried out the arrest, and if it is the police, the reason for the arrest.
