Over 1,000 pupils of Uganda Martyrs Primary School in Mbarara were taught fire fighting skills on Wednesday, reports Abdulkarim Ssengendo.

During the training exercise, Cpl Richard Turyasingura from the regional Police fire office advised schools to buy fire fighting equipment like water hose reels, which he said can be used to extinguish fires.

The head teacher, Prima Arinaitwe Tibesigwa, said the training targeted staff members and pupils from both boarding and day sections.

She said the school had installed five fire extinguishers in the dormitories and near the classrooms.

Tibesigwa appealed to the Ministry of Education to include fire lessons on the syllabus to teach pupils how to protect themselves.

Many schools have undertaken safety measures against fire outbreaks since the April inferno at Budo Junior School in Wakiso district that left 20 children dead. Fire outbreaks in schools have in the recent months escalated in the country.
