THE Ugandan film industry might be better than many Ugandans perceive. When Battle of the Souls was presented at the Zanzibar International Film Festival last week by director Matt Bish, the audience rated it a notch higher than other East African films that showed.

Matt Bish is Roger Mugisha’s (former Shadow) elder brother and the film is inspired by Mugisha’s former life as a devil worshipper.

After screening the film on July 15 at Old Fort, the audience applauded for a whole minute. It was commended by many as a great work, greater than any they watched in the festival.

The film’s camera shots, majorly close-ups and its dark texture make the movie look bigger than its budget. Some commended it for pioneering the genre of horror in East Africa.

However, the story was described as being subjective and predictable. Maybe that is why the jury did not choose it for any award.
