THE Deputy Chief Justice, Laetitia Mukasa Kikonyogo, has urged Parliament to quickly create laws to enable the Government restore peace and justice in the northern region.

“I would like to appeal to Parliament to fasttrack the Bills for enactment,” she said, at the closing of a two-day justice, law and order sector forum, on Friday at the Imperial Resort Beach Hotel, Entebbe.

Kikonyogo said after enduring 20 years of armed conflict, the northern region needed quick restoration of peace.

She said access to justice and ensuring law and order were central to national development.

“It is only within a safe and just environment that we can educate our children, ensure that women meaningfully participate in nation-building, till our land and do business with a view of contributing to poverty eradication,” she explained.

Kikonyogo added that although there had been some gains towards peace, it was not the time to become complacent.

She encouraged the sector to renew its commitment to the on-going reforms to ensure the rule of law, respect for human rights, access to justice and increased security.

Kikonyogo said one of the best ways to address peace was to go through transitional justice mechanisms.
