The bicycles for peace project has been launched to fight the rampant sexual violence against women in the war-ravaged north.

The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) trained 700 women from Gulu, Lira, Kitgum and Pader under this project.

The gender and cultural affairs state minister, Rukia Isanga Nakadama, said: “These bicycles will facilitate the women’s movement to dispersed areas.”

The UNDP deputy resident representative, Athman Kakiva, said the women were trained in peace building, negotiation and conflict resolution.

He said this during the handover of 156 bicycles for peace to women’s groups in Kitgum and Pader districts recently.

Kakiva stated that the project was one of the components of the programme’s sexual gender-based violence prevention and response programme in the war ravaged districts in the north.

“Women have borne the brunt of physical and psychological suffering during the conflict and now, in the recovery phase, many are still targets of violence,” he said.
