MUBENDE-Armed thugs have shot dead a local administration Police officer. “Corporal Peterson Ssebira was killed on Monday morning at the taxi park,” said Nsubuga Bewaayo, the resident district commissioner. “The thugs found him in one of the cars in the park, shot him from close range and went away with his AK-47 rifle.” Bewaayo said the thugs travelling in a saloon car and motorcycle, later sped off on Kibaale Road. The RDC, who said Ssebira had left his station at the magistrates’ court, warned Police officers and private security guards to stick to their stations.

City mother faces murder/
KAMPALA-The woman who last week allegedly strangled her four children in Kamwokya, a city suburb, may be charged with murder, the Police have said. Kampala Extra Police spokesman Simeo Nsubuga said they were awaiting a medical report from Butabika Mental Hospital on Margaret Kasande’s mental status to decide what action to take. “If the results show that Kasande was sane at the time of committing the crime, she will be charged with murder. But if the report shows that she was mentally unstable, she will stay in the hospital.”

New policy set for charities
KAMPALA-A policy to define the roles and duties of charities working in the country has been developed by their umbrella organisation, the National NGO Forum. “The quality assurance certification policy was devised following widespread complaints about the improper conduct of some NGOs in the war-ravaged northern Uganda,” said Arthur Larok, the programme coordinator. “Not all NGOs are good. Some have ill motives,” he noted.

Company gives Mengo bicycles
KAMPALA-Buganda Kingdom has received 59 bicycles to assist in mobilising people to buy its certificates to raise funds. The bikes were donated by Creative Engineering. The director, Charles Mulamara, handed them to the deputy premier, Emmanuel Ssendaula at Bulange, Mengo.
