THERE is need for people to invest in rural areas to empower the masses fight poverty and improve their livelihoods, the First Lady has couselled.

Mrs. Janet Museveni said some people invest abroad where they work and live, forgetting their roots back home and the fact that they could do something to improve the condition of the people at home.

Mrs. Museveni, who is the Ruhaama MP, was on Saturday presiding over a fundraising for Miranda Memorial Academy in Rukunguri district. “I want to hail Miranda’s family for investing at home after working for many years in America.

This is a wise investment because it has helped people in the area to educate their children at subsidised school fees,” she said. Over sh50m was raised in cash and pledges. President Yoweri Museveni’s portrait was auctioned at sh3m. Rujumbura MP Jim Muhwezi donated sh2m.

The First Lady auctioned the school’s emblem at sh1.5m. She later added sh2m. The school started in 2006 with 80 pupils, from primary one to five but now has Primary Seven with about 270 pupils. Three sisters, Tess, Monica and Connie Rwamunahe, founded the school in memory of their grandfather, Miranda.
