BUSHENYI Woman MP Mary Karooro Okurut has urged the Police to improve its image to gain the confidence of the public.

Okurut noted that people had stopped trusting the police because it covers up cases and makes evidence files disappear.
This has made people to start taking the law in their hands, she added.

She blamed the increase of defilement and murder cases on the police, saying it had failed to investigate them.

Citing the recent incident in Mbarara where a mother cut the penis of a suspected defiler, she said, such people do not think they can get justice from the Police.

The Woman MP said she had received complaints from people that their case files had disappeared and the suspects released.

Karooro was on Wednesday addressing representatives of Kyangyenyi and Kigarama sub-counties women groups at Kigarama sub-county headquarters.

She asked parents to monitor their daughters, especially those in school, saying most defilement offences were being committed by teachers.

“You need to monitor the teachers and know how they relate with our children. Some of them pretend to be friends with the children but ended up defiling them,” Karooro advised.

She contributed sh1m towards the groups’ revolving fund for the women groups.
