THE education ministry is to recruit 4,170 primary school teachers across the country this year.

“Attention will be put on districts that are hard to reach,” said a source at the Education Service Commission. “We particularly encourage women and people with disabilities to apply.”

The teachers will work as senior education assistants, according to the commission, which is responsible for the recruitment process. It said Grade Three teachers, diploma and degree holders in primary education would be recruited.

To qualify, a candidate must have at least six years teaching experience in government-aided primary schools.

“All applicants will be expected to channel their applications through their head teachers,” the commission said.

Among other duties, the teachers will be expected to carry out continuous assessment and evaluation of pupils’ performance and to develop teaching aids.

The districts which have the biggest teacher shortages are Bushenyi (166), Mukono (129), Kabarole (118), Masaka (116) and Iganga (100).

This will bring the number of primary teachers in the country to 148,832, from the current 144,832.

An education ministry official said the recruitment was meant to solve the increased demand for primary school teachers to handle the bigger pupil enrolment since Universal Primary Education kicked off in 1997.

The number of primary school teachers reduced by 18,000 between 2006 and 2007, according to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics.

The pupil-to-teacher ratio also went up during the same period from 48 to 57.

The recommended ratio is one teacher to 45 pupils.

It called on the Government to recruit more teachers since a high pupil-to-teacher ratio compromises the quality of education.
